Ann Jarvis was a pacifist who had taken care of wounded soldiers on both sides during the American Civil War. When her mother died in 1905, Anna Jarvis was heartbroken. Two years later, in 1907, Anna Jarvis and her friends began to write to influential ministers, businessmen, and lawmakers in the United States to seek support in order to make Mother's Day a legal holiday. Anna Jarvis believes that her children often ignore their feelings towards her mother. She hopes that Mother's Day will make people think more about what the mother has done for the family. The first Mother's Day was held in West Virginia and Pennsylvania on May 10, 1908. In this day, Cornelius was selected as the flower dedicated to her mother and passed down through it. With the unremitting efforts of Anna Jarvis, in 1913, the US Congress passed a bill deciding to make the second Sunday of May every year as the statutory Mother’s Day.
